Janet Dovidio: Giano student wins art contest

Congratulations to Giano Intermediate School student Hector Sanchez, who won an art contest in the Rowland Unified School District schools.

Operation Safe Communities, which coordinated the contest, asked participants to draw artwork with safety messages that tied in with the Safe Communities Festival at Rowland Heights Park. The winning drawings were displayed on folders given to all fourth through sixth graders in the district.

The runners-up were: Raymond Gonzalez, Rincon; Valerie Ng, Alvarado; Brandon Lim, Alvarado; and Citlaly Becerra, Giano.

Elementary school students also had a safety-related art contest, in which they were invited to design a bookmark or badge. The winning entry, created by Blanca Rico, a fourth-grader at Northam Elementary, was reproduced for all elementary school students in the district.

COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT DAY

The 12th annual Community Employment Day, which offers high school seniors and other job-seekers a chance to interview with local companies, will take place from 3 to 7:30 p.m. on May 15 at the Puente Hills Mall.

More than 50 businesses will interview some 300 applicants for part- and full-time employment at the event, sponsored by Puente Hills Mall, the San Gabriel Valley School-to-Career Partnership and Tech Prep Consortium.

Students from Bassett, Hacienda La Puente, Rowland and West Covina unified school districts and the East San Gabriel Valley and La Puente Valley ROPs will participate.

An open orientation session takes place from 5-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, in room 101 at the Rowland Adult and Community Education campus, at 2100 Lerona Ave., Rowland Heights.

Orientations will also be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 and from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, near the center court on the lower level of the at Puente Hills Mall, 1600 Azusa Ave., Industry. The orientation sessions, which are required, will provide information on how the event will operate and offer interview strategies.

ROWLAND HIGH STUDENT RECOGNITIONS

The April edition of the Rowland High School's "Raider Review" recognized many recent student awards.

Three students were named National Merit Scholarship Finalists: Seven Chang, Winne Wong and Frank Teng.

The student are now eligible for Merit Scholarship awards. Way to go!

Senior Yolly Liu is not only an International Baccalaureate student, but is an accomplished ballerina. She dances for the Pasadena Civic Ballet and recently performed an inspiring gypsy solo for "The Little Mermaid" for a sellout crowd at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse.

Four varsity boys basketball team members earned all-league honors after the team placed second in the San Antonio League and advanced to the second round of CIF-SS playoffs.

Joey Chase and Brandon Stansell were named to the first team all-league, while B.J. Oyefeso and Daniel Tieu earned Honorable Mentions.

The Parent Teacher Student Association hosted its annual Founder's Day celebration in February, recognizing teachers, staff, students and community members for their contributions to Rowland High School.

The honorees were: community members June Au-Yeung, Carol Chavez and Sharol Kimura; Associated Student Body President Max Zisman; teachers Rich Thune and Paul Vanderlinden; and staff members Clare Huang and Lynda Rohrer.
