The Rowland girls have practically been a non-entity when it comes to winning league titles and long runs in the CIF-SS playoffs, so it’s hard to imagine that the Raiders could even be considered a favorite to win a CIF-SS championship.
But Rowland is the top seed in the Division 2A tournament, which gets underway Wednesday. The Raiders (22-2) play host to El Modena of Orange.
“The girls bought into the underdog role and the whole mentality that they are still that,” coach Quentin Carr said. “Even with the No. 1 seed placing, everyone still believes in that underdog hashtag. We keep thinking we’re underdogs when we fight for every possession.”
Rowland has won 11 consecutive games, including a 10-0 run through the Valle Vista League. It is the Raiders’ first league title since 1988, when they shared it with Los Altos, and the team’s third in school history. It won the title outright in ‘79.
