Nogales Athletes Find Reading Buddies at Yorbita

The big, burly linemen hunkered down on the tiny chairs, two giants in a Lilliputian world of kindergartners.

The Nogales High football players left their game faces back at their school, beaming instead at the tots and teacher waiting for storytime at Yorbita Elementary School on Nov. 14.

The gentle giants dwarfed the youngsters sitting around them. At 210 pounds, Brian Manriquez obviously outweighed the kids 10 to 1. Everyone at the elementary school seemed excited to have the high school athletes visit them. A long line of kindergartners waited patiently for the team bus to pull up to the school.

The tiny tots almost flipped onto their backs as they craned their necks to look up at 6-foot-6-inch basketball player Adura Awosika. And it would have taken a ladder for them to see eye-to-eye with basketball guard Kandal Guillery.

But the little ones bravely waved their pom-poms, their tiny voices emitting high-pitched cheers.
