LA PUENTE >> There were smiling faces all around Friday as about 300 girls received a free pair of designer shoes, backpacks filled with school supplies and more.

Covina-based shoe boutique Aldabella Scarpa held its fifth annual Shoe Giveback Event at Hurley Elementary School in La Puente to provide the select group of girls-in-need from Villacorta, Northam and Hurley elementary schools with support just as the new school year nears.

Co-owners and sisters Monica Gonzales and Ann Marie Smith attended schools in the area and have hosted the event to help empower young girls. The event featured special guest speakers hoping to inspire the girls including Amelia Macchiavello, senior reporter and producer from Despierta America; Adriana Michelle, Miss Los Angeles Latina 2013; Judy Echavez, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and host/actress; and Josefa Salinas, an author and morning news anchor from Hot 92.3 FM.

The girls also had the chance to receive free haircuts from Supercuts and took part in craft workshops offered by Home Depot.

Monica Gonzales, winner of the 2012 Verizon Wireless Entrepreneur of the Year, also spoke.
