Rowland Unified School District unveils mobile app
Need to check your student’s grades? Can’t remember the date of the next PTA meeting?
For Rowland Unified School District parents, there’s an app for that.
The school district launched a free mobile app this month to keep parents and community members connected to the schools.
“I’m amazed that the district would come up with this as a way to communicate with the parents,” said Kimo Morris, whose daughter attends Alvarado Intermediate School in Rowland Heights.
Within moments of learning about it, Morris took out his iPhone, downloaded the app and noticed there was a meeting at his daughter’s school the next week.
“It is so much faster than email. It’s the modern way of communicating with the community,” Morris said.
The district has been communicating with parents and the community through Facebook and Twitter, board member Heidi Gallegos said. The app seemed like the next obvious choice.
"Who doesn't have a smartphone nowadays?" she said. "Some third-graders have nicer phones than I do."
Parents can check for district news, school events, even receive information from their child’s teacher about grades and attendance.
“It’s not just [the district] pushing out that information, but it facilitates communication from the parents,” said district spokeswoman Gina Ward.
The district has always had a system of contacting parents with updates, whether it be on the phone or via a sent-home note.
The new app is like that system, Ward said, “but on steroids.”
