WEST COVINA - As showtime neared, 28 fourth- through eighth-graders on Monday prepared to be thrust into the spotlight during their upcoming performances this week.

The production of "Annie Jr." - a shorter version of the classic musical - is the culmination of the students' involvement in Rowland Unified's Summer Theater Musical program at the district's Hollingworth Elementary.

"For some of these kids, they're the shy ones in the classroom that you never knew had that kind of flare in that they get on stage," said teacher Karoll Joson, who heads the program. "They're saying `yay I can do this' and we're glad to see that."

Students prepare for three hours a day, Monday through Friday, for four weeks leading up to their stage debut, Joson said.

The shows this week will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Hollingworth Elementary, 3003 Hollingworth St., West Covina.

The cost is $5 at the door; children under 7 years old will be admitted free.
