Grandma always knitted us mittens for Christmas. The soft, colorful mitts were a labor of love and part of our Swedish heritage.

We still have these handcrafted memories. Though they now fit her great-great-grandchildren, the mittens still mean as much to us as they did that Christmas day many years ago.

Today, holiday presents are mass produced items bought at a big box store. And few young people learn how to knit, let alone take the time to handcraft a present for others.

Unless, of course, they're students in the leadership class at Giano Middle School in West Covina.
