Presentation 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Paul Spitzzeri - Curator of the Homestead Museum…………………….. Industry, CA

In the early 1840’s two Taos, New Mexico business partners named John Rowland and William Workman led a large party of migrants westward on the Santa Fe Trail and settled in the southern portion of Alta California, then a part of Mexico. A few years later they applied for and received a land grant of 48,790 acres from then Mexican Governor Pio Pico. Their newly obtained land included the area that is now known as the East San Gabriel Valley. A few years later, September 9, 1850 California was annexed by the United States and officially became a state.

Come learn about the very interesting history of our area. The presentation by Mr. Spitzzeri will include information about the San Gabriel Mission and the indigenous people who occupied the area when the Rowland/Workman party arrived, how and why they split the land between themselves a few years later, and a number of other interesting facts.
