LA PUENTE THIRD GRADERS FROM HURLEY ELEMENTARY TOUR La Puente, CA -- On Thursday, March 5, 2009, 104 third grade students and 25 parents from Hurley Elementary will spend an action-packed day at Cal State Fullerton thanks to the, “I’m Going to College!” program. Wearing white T-shirts with the script "I'm Going to College!" written on back, the students and parents will take their first steps on a college campus and be greeted with a special Cultural Dance presentation in the Titan Theater performed by Cal State Fullerton students. The Hurley college program began in the spring of 1990 but ran out of funds in 1999. The school is thrilled to bring back the program this year. The goal is early intervention and to plant the seed early -- the idea of college to both students and parents while in elementary grades. Many donations were given to Hurley Elementary by Cal State Fullerton’s Book Store, Associated Student Group, and Mesa Cooperativa, an active Student group on campus. The Chicano/Chicana Studies Department donated funds for the Science Adventure Standard Based Presentation that the students will be involved in. Students from Cal State Fullerton will also be volunteering as guides for the groups as they tour the campus stopping at designated areas such as: library, Performing Arts Center, The Greenhouse, a Soccer Team presentation in the quad, the health center, and the new For more information on the program, please contact: Arlene Cardenas, Hurley Teacher/Parent Academic Advisor at (626) 965-2429
