AT ROWLAND HEIGHTS COMMUNITY PARK
 
ROWLAND HEIGHTS, CA – MARCH 26, 2009 – The community is invited to attend the 17th annual Safe Communities Festival on April 4, 2009. The festival celebrates the role all facets of the community play in promoting a safe, secure and peaceful environment for all to enjoy. The Safe Communities Festival will feature more than 35 health and information booths, entertainment, food and game booths, public safety displays and demonstrations by community groups, Rowland Unified schools and public service organizations. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rowland Heights Community Park, located at 1500 Banida in Rowland Heights. The Festival comes as the conclusion of the community-wide celebration of Safe Communities Week, March 30 - April 4 . The event is sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe’s Office, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department/Southeast Recreation District, California Highway Patrol – Santa Fe Springs Office, Operation Safe Community, the Rowland Unified School District and the Rowland Unified School District Safety and Drug Alcohol Tobacco Education (DATE) Program.
 “Each year this event continues to grow and we are thrilled with the wide variety of activities that take place all week long as part of Safe Communities Week,” said Heidi Gallegos, co-chair of the Operation Safe Community Planning Committee. 
The Festival will begin with an opening ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a performance of the award-winning Rowland Jazz Band, led by music teacher Laura Tovar.  
 At 11 a.m. the recognition ceremony will take place that will include the Safe Communities Week Student Winners: Elementary Bookmark/Badge Contest:  Katrina Luangkhot, Grade 4, from Ybarra Academy and  PeeChee Folder Contest: Minmay Ly,  Grade 8, Giano.  Students will also be recognized at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, March 31.
The public can also enjoy vehicles and equipment from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department, complete with a demonstration of a “Jaws of Life” rescue effort.
